Bible Journaling - Part One

I was hoping to post something last week but among my usual work and house routine, I added the chore of getting our taxes ready. I think it took two days to get everything done. So needless to say, some things got put on the back burner.

This week I decided to keep it simple and post some of my latest Bible journaling. (If you missed my last post you can click HERE to see my other pages.) 

The Preacher is preaching a series of sermons on "I Am" where Jesus calls himself the I Am in 8 different passages in John. John 8:58

This is from one of the Preacher's sermons where Jesus says "I Am the Light". I loved the image of Jesus kneeling before the "woman caught in adultery". I found the image through Google images and tried to trace it but it didn't work out very well, so I had to fill in the places I couldn't see through my phone's light box app. John 8:1-30

This is from a sermon the Preacher did some time ago. This saying is a quote from the Preacher from that sermon. Again,some tracing done here. Luke 19:31-34

I found a version of this on Pinterest and decided I needed to include it in my Bible.Psalm 52:8 I didn't 'cheat' on this, I free-hand drew the tree.

This is a picture of my mother-in-law, Joan Smith. While going through some old photos, I found this picture of her petting a cow. Her dad had livestock on his farm, but I'm not sure if this was their cow or if she just stopped along a road just to pet this cow. I could see her doing just that.
I knew I wanted to use it in my Bible and knew exactly what verse to put it with. Psalm 50:16. I printed it on Avery's Clear Full Sheet Label, cut it to size and adhered it to the page after painting the page with acrylic paint.

Bible Art Journaling

Today I thought I'd share with you some of the things 

I've been working on in my Bible.

I have added washi tape to the edges of each book of the Bible

Here is what it looks like on the inside. I added it to one side and then folded it over so it would show on the opposite page. Are they perfect? No! Am I perfect? No! Were the people in the Bible perfect? No! Well, except Jesus, of course.

So I'm okay with the tape not being lined up perfectly.

I adhered washi tape to Psalm 139, my favorite chapter in the Bible.

I also adhered these arrow tags to John 14 and then I outlined them with a black pen. (Micron 05) (Tags - free download from Shanna Noel)

I actually tried my hand at freehand drawing. I don't think it turned out so bad.

This page was done with watercolor crayons. (Caran D'Ache Watercolor Crayons)

On these two I added stickers that I found in my scrapbooking stash. I thought they would be cute for the passages talking about Noah bringing the animals into the ark. I don't think I'm done with these. I may add some color to the background. (Stickers - Me and My Big Idea)

This one was done with watercolor pencils. I had adhered the #1 sticker to the page before adding the water to the pencil. It kind of pulled the paper around the sticker. Lesson learned.

I used acrylic paints on this page. The 'Walk in Faith' tag I made in Word.

This is my favorite page so far. I had seen others using the acrylic paints so I decided to try it myself. This is my new favorite way of adding color. It does not bleed through, it stays on top of the page, and drys very quickly.

Bible Art Journaling - A New Adventure

For 19 years I have been a scrapbooker. I have loved the art of scrapbooking since the first time I put an adhesive square on the back of a picture and stuck it on decorative paper to create a page memorializing our family's life together. I have grown in this art form, right along with the growth of the industry. Always trying new techniques and materials.

My next adventure came when I discovered art journaling. I had found an old ledger book at an auction, and I began to collect the supplies for art journaling and I was hooked. If you're not familiar with this type of art, just type in 'art journaling' into the keyword search box on Pinterest or YouTube and there you will see so many examples. 

Then in December of last year I discovered painting on canvas. As a Christmas present to a friend, I signed us up to take a painting class. I had so much fun that I have taken 2 more classes and I'm beginning to try my own creations at home. The preacher likes to show off my paintings to everyone who visits. He calls me an artist but there's something daunting about that label.

Now to tell you about my newest adventure in Bible Art Journaling. I had found a pin on Pinterest by Shanna Noel and I found what she had done in her Bible so fascinating. (Again, if you are not familiar with this, go onto Pinterest or YouTube.) The Bible she was using was an ESV translation by Crossway. It has a 2" margin on the left and right sides for note taking. But what Shanna did was so much more than taking notes -- she used those margins to art journal. How awesome is that?! Reading the Word of God and art journaling? Perfect!

I was a little hesitant about starting this new venture, but one day I saw on Facebook a picture of a Journaling Bible. A friend had posted pictures of her first entry in her new Bible. I commented back to her and she, knowing my love of scrapbooking, encouraged me to start.

Now I have begun my own ESV Journaling Bible and I love it! (I found this Bible on Amazon.) I even found a Facebook Group dedicated to this art form, so many women loving the Word and expressing that love through their art. 

I take notes each Sunday during the preacher's sermon, writing down keywords that stand out to me within the scripture. Then sometime during the week I'll go back in my Bible and enter these words in the 2" margin next to the scripture we studied. 

I am having so much fun with my new adventure - Bible Art Journaling!
